Is ACT Tutoring Right For Your Student

The ACT measures a student’s current academic level in English, mathematics, reading, and science (as well as writing if the optional ACT Plus Writing is taken). If your student generally does well in his or her high school courses, you may wonder if ACT tutoring is necessary. Private tutoring isn’t for everyone—but it may make the difference in helping your child reach his or her potential on the ACT. If your student falls into one of the categories below, we recommend taking a look at our ACT tutoring options. The Straight-A Student Students who do well in school should naturally perform well on the ACT, right? Not necessarily. Strong students don’t automatically become strong ACT test takers, according to Mella Baxter, a high school reading coach and Hope Street Group National Teacher Fellow. â€Å"Some students are brilliant thinkers, but poor test takers,† Baxter writes in her takepart.com article, â€Å"The Standardized Testing Debate: The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly.† A variety of factors can impact how students perform on standardized tests, and high marks on a report card are no guarantee that a student will coast by on test day. Some students are overconfident and don’t read the test critically enough, which can cause them to fall for trick answers. Others may excel in math and science but struggle with reading, causing their composite score to fall. Some students also experience test anxiety, leading them to score lower than they are capable of. Even if your student is r anked high in his or her class, don’t rule out ACT tutoring. The Overachiever Your child may have already taken the ACT and done just fine—well enough to get into plenty of quality institutions. However, college counselors condition students to designate â€Å"reach schools,† so it is common for even high-scoring students to want to take the test again to maximize their score, or perhaps to secure scholarship money. The question is, how can he or she prepare differently this time around? Our experienced tutors know how to target the areas where there is room for improvement. Writing News E.A. Poe House Museum Will Be Reopened in October

Poe Baltimore, the organization which is going to take over the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum in Baltimore, has announced the date of reopening: October 4, 2013. This does not simply mean that the old museum will be reopened – although located on the same premises and displaying most of its old exhibits, the new house museum will be considerably different from its predecessor in its approach to the topic. For example, it will pay much greater attention to the ways Poe had been connected with Baltimore and this particular house: what events took place there, how they were intertwined with his literary work and so on. Interestingly enough, the museum will try to display not only the house, but the city as well – that is, how it looked at the time Poe lived there. Ann Barton Brown, museum consultant working on this project, when asked to comment on the news, stated that their main goal is to make the visitors of this museum feel that they are transferred into the times of Edgar Allan Poe – the less of the 21st century they feel inside the house, the better. This, however, doesn’t mean that Poe Baltimore shun the high technologies in all their forms. For example, Digital Harbor School of Baltimore has assigned some of its students a project of creating a museum website until the end of July, and the project members seriously consider giving the visitors an opportunity to use credit cards (previously the museum only accepted cash). Some notable exhibits will also get back to museum, such as the lock of the writer’s hair and the telescope used by his stepfather. Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most well-known and notable American writers – although he worked in a lot of different genres (from poetry and literary criticism to mystery and science fiction), he is best known for his short stories, which, according to many experts in literature, laid the foundations of modern horror and detective genres as well as contributed greatly to the emerging science fiction genre. He is also the first American writer who was known for the fact that he made living by writing alone, without any additional jobs to support him. The results are well-known – although his life was at times difficult and he always had problems with money, nowadays he is recognized as one of the most important figures in the history of American literature who influences the modern culture even now, more than 150 years after his death. Anyway the reopening of Poe’s house museum is good news for everyone who is not indifferent to the history of literature in general and American literature in particular.

Ego-Resilience as a Protective Factor Between Childhood Trauma Psychopathology Jace Pincock University of Utah Introduction Clinical research reveals that psychological trauma during childhood increases the likelihood of developing psychological or functional disorders in adulthood. However, a significant percentages of adults with a history of trauma remain psychologically healthy. These individuals have been described as resilient. Resilience is the ability of human beings to persevere, rebound and even flourish after experiencing traumatic events (Bonnano, 2004) Although there has been an increase in resilience research, the psychological processes involved are still debated. An important issue is whether resilience develops as a consequence of trauma (resilience as an outcome) or if resilience is a relatively common characteristic of many people that can emerge with or without traumatic experiences (resilience as a trait or ego-resiliency). In this study, Dr. Phillipe proposed an integration of these two perspectives by showing that ego-resiliency can play an important protective role in the relationship between childhood trauma and the development of psychopathology. A total of 118 outpatients at a psychology clinic completed questionnaires measuring their level of childhood trauma, ego-resiliency, anxiety, depression, and self-harm behaviors. In today’s society the societal/cultural attitude can vary from welcoming to perceiving that persons with mental illnesses are aggressive and will physically harm or injury anyone that they are not used to. I think that many people still think this way because of characteristics such as perceived aggression, temper tantrums and quick changing moods. 4. What ethical questions have arisen in the movie you are watching? Some of the ethical questions that arose in my mind were dealing with the lack of medical attention, the lack of education and the lack of purpose. Throughout the film Arnie never seemed to be educated appropriately for his learning capabilities, he never received medical attention and seemed as though he may have been unsure of his purpose in life. Granted the film is unable to portray his entire life, he may have received education but I am almost sure that medical attention was never sought. 5. Does your knowledge of the field of psychiatric nurse change your response to the film, its characters or its characteristics? Explain. My knowledge of psychiatric nursing doesn’t change my response to the film because I am aware that there are people like Arnie who have mental disorders who live in these rural areas that can’t afford medical attention. This movie predicts this scenario perfectly. And in these rural towns there are people who still prefer not to be around people with mental disorders for whatever their reason may be; as they are unaccepting of it. I believe that being a psychiatric nurse should encompass being open to everyone else’s opinions and realities. As we would like for everyone to be treated as a person at all times, there are situations where this doesn’t happen. 6. How would you use the film to help clients, families, populations, or health care staff better understand mental illness or its treatment? This film could be used to help people who are impacted or curious about Autism because it provides a clear picture and understanding of what caring for an autistic child entails. It could also help them to understand that even though they have this mental disorder that they are still people and have emotions as we do. Hopefully this can help them to learn to treat them as they do anyone else. 7. If you were this â€Å"character’s† case manager, what strategies would you apply in helping them manage their care? If I were Arnie’s case manager I would suggest that seek medical attention throughout the year, attend a clinic in their area frequently if they are unable to locate a physician that can treat Arnie, and possibly utilize the many at home services or group services provided to help Arnie gain social skills and learn how to interact with others in a more socially acceptable way. If you were prescribing meds for this client, what would you prescribe? If I were to prescribe medications for Arnie I would suggest that he use Risperdal and Abilify as I think that they would help control his aggression, deliberate self-injury and quick mood changes.
